Hirner jumped actively in the Ski Jumping World Cup from 1982 to 1988 . He competed in his first World Cup competition on January 1, 1982 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen as part of the Four Hills Tournament 1981/82 . On January 6, 1982 in Bischofshofen he was able to jump into the top ten for the first time with place 7 and thus win World Cup points for the first time. In his last competition in the World Cup season 1981/82 he jumped into the points again with 13th place in Engelberg , so that he was able to end the season in 41st place overall. The following World Cup season in 1982/83 was the most successful season of his career. Even if he landed far behind the points in all competitions for the Four Hills Tournament 1982/83 , he was able to achieve top 10 placements after the tour. In Swedish Falun he reached 3rd place even the first and only podium finish of his career. At the end of the season he was in 18th place in the overall World Cup ranking. In the years that followed, however, it fell far short of expectations. Only in Cortina d'Ampezzo on January 8, 1985 and in Klingenthal on January 17, 1986 did he once again make it into the points. After the World Cup season 1987/88 he ended his active ski jumping career without luck.
After the end of his active career, Hirner completed his training as a ski jumping trainer and now works as a trainer at NAZ Eisenerz .
