Otto Heinrich Herz (born March 21, 1944 in Weinheim an der Bergstrasse ) is a German educational reformist , psychologist and author .

Life

In 1965 Otto Herz passed his Abitur as an industrial scholarship holder from the Heiner and Walter Freudenberg Foundation and president of the student parliament at the Odenwald School and then studied psychology , education , philosophy and theology in Hamburg and Konstanz .

In Hamburg, Herz was the initiator of the “Students in Companies” campaign. In 1967/68 he worked as deputy chairman of the Association of German Student Associations (VDS) and became a member of the SPD .

From 1970 to 1980 he worked for Hartmut von Hentig in setting up the laboratory school and the upper level college at Bielefeld University . Otto Herz had been a member of the overall responsible sponsoring association of the Odenwald School since the mid-1970s and resigned in 2010 after the OSO abuse scandal became public again . 1980 to 1982 he worked as the federal chairman of the non-profit society comprehensive school (GGG) and from 1981 to 1984 as the last "headmaster" of the Hermann-Lietz-Schule , the founding boarding school of the German state educational institutions .

In 1985, Herz joined the Institute for Intercultural Education at the Free University of Berlin as a research assistant . In 1987 he took up a job at the State Institute for Schools and Further Education in Soest , responsible for the project "Designing School Life and Opening Up Schools" (GÖS) for COMED e. V., the association for the promotion of community education. In 1991 he was, with Wolfgang Tiefensee , co-founder of the Leipzig neighborhood school , one of the two Saxon school trials. He was the head of the "Practical Learning" department at the University of Dortmund and from 1993 to 1997 a member of the Executive Board of the Education and Science Union (GEW), School Board Department . Then he campaigned for the mayor of Leipzig, Wolfgang Tiefensee. He has been working as a freelancer since 1998.

In 2000 he set up the Foundation for the Promotion of Civil Courage . The non-profit foundation promotes political education to develop personal judgment and the ability to act politically.

Otto Herz writes specialist articles, gives lectures and is involved in numerous school and educational projects. He is the patron and supporter of the association initiative Schüler Helfen Leben e. V. He describes himself as anti-authoritarian and rejects the school system in Germany as being unjust.

Otto Herz is married to the pedagogue Ulla Dolt-Herz and lives and works in Bielefeld and Leipzig ( Alte Handelsschule ) and has a daughter.
