history

Brocken station (1907)

The route to the Brocken was opened on October 4, 1898. The station building was built in 1924 from granite stones . At first, due to the difficult weather conditions in winter, only one operation took place in the summer half of the year. After the destruction towards the end of the Second World War , the route to the Brocken was not operated again until May 14, 1949. From 1950 the station was also used in winter, it was not only used by winter sports enthusiasts; in July 1960 90,000 travelers were counted.

The inner-German border ran in close proximity since 1949, to the west at the foot of the Brocken. From August 14, 1961 - after the construction of the Berlin Wall began - public train traffic was discontinued and the Brocken was closed to the civilian population. Since then, the Brocken Railway has served exclusively military purposes. The mountain was later also surrounded with a wall on a contour line north of Schierke, the summit of the Brocken even again. The Brockenbahnhof was then used by the GDR border troops . Material freight trains still reached the station until 1987, when the train service to the Brocken ended due to the poor condition of the track.

After the political change , the border security systems and the military facilities were gradually dismantled from 1990 onwards, the last Russian soldiers left the Brocken on March 30, 1994. The Brocken summit was then renatured at a cost of millions, it is now a popular destination for visitors to the Harz Mountains who are looking for relaxation. After the restoration of the dilapidated track system at the same time, the Brocken Railway was put back into operation in July 1992 and since then the Brocken Railway has been serving its original purpose as a tourist station.

Furnishing

The station building houses a restaurant as well as ticket and souvenir sales for the Harz narrow-gauge railways. There is also an office in the station for the local operating staff of the Harz narrow-gauge railways.
