Ludvik Zajc (born January 21, 1943 in Jesenice , Yugoslavia ; † July 18, 2011 in Oslo , Norway ) was a Yugoslav ski jumper and later a Slovenian ski jumping coach.
Career
Zajc made his international debut at the Four Hills Tournament in 1961/62 . After a cautious start in the first three competitions, he achieved his best result of the tour in the final competition on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen . In the overall ranking he reached the 38th place. At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane in 1962 , Zajc jumped to 38th place with 89.5 and 89 meters on the large hill. After two jumps on 64.5 meters from the normal hill, he finished 25th, tied with Norwegian Arne Dalslaaen .
In the following Four Hills Tournament in 1962/63 , Zajc was able to improve slightly and, despite weaker individual performances, ended up in 27th place overall. He finished the Four Hills Tournament 1963/64 a year later in only 39th place overall. At the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1964 , Zajc reached 39th place on the normal hill and 42nd place on the large hill.
With the Four Hills Tournament 1964/65 Zajc finally denied the best tour of his career. So he started with a surprising fourth place on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf . He also achieved the best single tour result of his career. Despite this success, he did not start in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck . Only in Bischofshofen did he show another very good jumping performance with sixth place. In the overall standings, Zajc finished 10th with these two results.
In Oslo he jumped at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1966 from the normal hill on 73 and 70 meters and reached 42nd place. From the normal hill he was able to increase his ranking slightly and ended up in 40th place after jumps on 68.5 and 69.5 meters.
At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble , Zajc once again demonstrated his qualities. After good performances on the normal hill, he ended up tied with Manfred Queck and Gari Napalkow in 14th place. On the large hill, he achieved another top 10 placement in ninth place. At the Holmenkollen Ski Festival 1968 he reached third place and thus his best individual result in an international A-class competition.
In the following Four Hills Tournament in 1968/69 he jumped again to ninth place in Oberstdorf and, after good further results, finally reached 16th place in the overall standings. It was his last tour at this high level. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1970 in Štrbské Pleso , he jumped from the large hill to 90 and 98 meters and ended up tied with the Finn Raimo Ekholm in 15th place. From the normal hill he landed at 79 and 75 meters and thus reached 19th place.
After the end of his active career, Zajc began to work as a ski jumping trainer in his homeland in 1972. Later he looked after ski jumpers and Nordic combined athletes in Italy , Slovenia and Norway . In the 1990s he was the first national coach for Slovenia. From 1998 to 2002 he was in charge of the Norwegian national ski jumping team.
On June 9, 2011, he was officially recognized for his achievements in the Ski Museum by the Norwegian Ski Association, which he supported for many years as an advisor, from the President of the Association Sverre K. Seeberg and from the NATO Secretary General Truls Jahnsen .
Zajc died on July 18, 2011 after a long and serious illness in Oslo.
