Antonín Hájek (born February 12, 1987 in Frýdlant v Čechách ) is a former Czech ski jumper whose strengths were ski flying .
Career
Ski jumper
Hájek was born in Frýdlant v Čechách and grew up in Harrachov , where he began to learn ski jumping at the age of five. His trainer was Jakub Jiroutek . He trains at Club VK Dukla Liberec and is part of the Czech ski jumping A team.
In the Four Hills Tournament he has so far made it into the top 30. He was unable to take part in the 2006 Winter Olympics because he had suffered a hernia a week earlier . In the following summer season he jumped on the podium twice in Hakuba (Japan) and won his first Continental Cup competition on July 29, 2006 in Oberstdorf . In September of the same year he reached his first podium in the Summer Grand Prix with two third places in the jumping in Hakuba, Japan , the overall ranking of which he finished with twelfth place. In the winter season 2006/2007 he reached the 6th place after some top 20 placements in Lahti at the Nordic Tournament.
In early April 2008, he suffered a serious car accident. He suffered numerous internal injuries and could only be saved with an emergency operation. After that he had to pause jumping training for a few months. His first appearance in the World Cup after the accident was on January 8, 2010 in the qualification for ski flying on the Kulm in Tauplitz, in which he marked the maximum distance. He then achieved his best ever World Cup placement and finished ski flying on January 9th with a 4th place. He was able to repeat this performance eight days later in Sapporo.
At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , he reached 21st place in jumping from the normal hill.
At the Ski Flying World Championships 2010 in Planica , Hajek reached 8th place in individual flies and with 236 m achieved the third largest ever established distance, which is still the Czech national record. At the Czech Championships on the large hill in 2012, which were held on September 2nd in Wisła, Poland, he was able to win his first national championship title.
After changing results in the Continental Cup, Hájek jumped back into the World Cup in Engelberg in December 2012 , but clearly missed the points. Even when he received the nomination again after further good Continental Cup placements in ski flying in Vikersund , he was unsuccessful. Only four days later in Harrachov did he succeed in scoring points in the World Cup again after three years. He was able to convince with places 29 and 17, so that he started again a few days later with ski flying in Oberstdorf . Here, too, he achieved surprisingly good results with 13th place in the individual and seventh place in the team. In the Continental Cup in Vikersund, with two fifth places, he narrowly missed the podium in March 2013. On September 21, 2013 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, he jumped back on the podium in a Grand Prix competition for the first time in seven years, when he finished third.
On September 14, 2015, he announced his retirement from active sport after poor results and persistent health problems.
Ski jumping coach
As a result, Hájek worked as an assistant coach for the Czech ski jumping teams. After David Jiroutek's dismissal , Hájek was promoted to head coach of the Czech Republic for the remainder of the 2019/20 World Cup season by the Czech Ski Association in mid-January 2020 .
