The Big Thunder was a ski jumping hill complex in Thunder Bay , Canada , located on Lake Superior , on which annual World Cup events took place, especially in the 1980s.
history
The large and normal hills were built in 1974 and were an annual World Cup station from the 1979/1980 season to the 1991/1992 season , and the season opener sometimes also took place there. In the 1980s the hills were declared a national training center and in 1985 the construction of four junior hills (K 64, K 37, K 20 and K 10) began, of which the two largest were even covered with plastic mattings. They were completed in 1986 and are called Little Thunder. Shortly afterwards, cross-country ski trails were built and applications for the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1995 were made . In 1992 the two large ski jumps got a new lift and were equipped with floodlights. After the successful World Cup, funding for the winter sports area was canceled and it had to close on June 30, 1996. After reactivation plans failed in 2002 and 2008, the Friends of Big Thunder are planning a new attempt to reactivate. They are trying to get 25 million euros in order to at least reopen the cross-country trails and the junior hills, if possible also the large and normal hills.
