Sapoljarny (also Sapoljarnyj , Russian Заполя́рный ) is a city with 15,825 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) on the Kola Peninsula in the Russian Oblast of Murmansk . It is located 158 km northwest of the regional capital Murmansk, not far from the Russian border with Norway .

Sapolyarny

The area of ​​the present-day city belonged to Finland from 1922 to 1940 . In 1956, Sapoljarny was founded under the name of Zhdanovsk ( Жда́новск ) - in honor of the politician Andrei Zhdanov . The occasion was the development of copper and nickel deposits in the area. In 1963 the place got its current name, which means something like "City behind the Arctic Circle", as well as the town charter .

Sapoljarny is best known for the Kola well , which was carried out about 10 km away from 1970–1994 and was the world's deepest borehole in the earth's crust from 1979 to 2008.

After the territorial reform in the 2000s, Sapoljarny, including the incorporated territories, has a total area of ​​around 4620 km², making it the largest city in Russia.

1940 was Kombinat Petschenganikel ( Печенганикель ) for the promotion of copper and nickel. Today it is part of the Russian mining company MMC Norilsk Nickel .
