history

The place was created in connection with the construction of the Nizhnetulomskaya hydropower plant , which was already planned according to the GOELRO plan, from 1934 to supply power to a section of the Murman Railway to be electrified . The power plant was built by Gulag prisoners. The first turbine was commissioned on January 13, 1937, the entire power plant on July 11, 1938.

On November 27, 1938 the place was given urban-type settlement status. The place name is said to have been derived from the name of the Sami Murmasch, who lived in the Tuloma estuary before the hydroelectric power station was built.
