history

Museum for the Air Force Division of the Northern Fleet

The place was first mentioned at the beginning of the 20th century under the name Grjasnaja Guba , when there were several fishermen's huts. In 1936 the place changed abruptly when it was decided to build an airfield there for the naval aviation forces of the Soviet Northern Fleet . After that, the place grew with the construction of administrative buildings, but most of the people lived in simpler wooden huts, most of which were destroyed in the 1980s. On July 15, 1954, the place was named Safonowo in honor of the Soviet war hero and pilot Boris Safonov . In 1966 Safonovo was assigned to the Severomorsk district .

There has been a museum for the Air Force Department of the Northern Fleet since 1976 . Furthermore, a memorial commemorates soldiers of the Northern Fleet who died in the battle.

A shipyard for submarines of the Northern Fleet still exists in Safonowo today .
