Sneschnogorsk ( Russian Снежногорск ) is a city in Murmansk Oblast ( Russia ) with 12,683 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the Kola Peninsula about 25 kilometers north of the Oblasthauptstadt Murmansk above the Olenjabucht , a tributary of the Kola Bay of the Barents Sea .

Snezhnogorsk is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and is one of the Closed Cities of Russia.

history

The place was created from 1964 under the name Vyuzhny (derived from Russian vjuga for snowstorm ) in connection with the construction of a repair yard for nuclear submarines , which began operations in 1970. At the same time, the place had the military code name Murmansk-60 .

From 1973 Vyuzhny was administratively subordinate to the city of Severomorsk until it became an independent city on October 4, 1980.

In 1994 the place was given its current name (from Russian sneg for snow ).

economy

In Snezhnogorsk is the Nerpa repair yard (Russian for inter alia for ringed seal , see city coat of arms) of the Russian navy's nuclear submarine fleet . Since 1994 ships in the fishing fleet have also been repaired.

Since 1995 there has been a factory for special concreted pipes, which Gazprom uses to transport natural gas extracted from the bottom of the Barents Sea .
