Joseph-René Bellot (born March 18, 1826 in Paris , † August 18, 1853 in the Arctic ) was a French naval officer and polar explorer .

Live and act

Bellot was born the son of a farrier . In 1831 the family moved from Paris to Rochefort . From the age of 15 he attended the Naval School ( Ecole Navale ) in Brest .

In 1845 he took part in an Anglo-French expedition to Madagascar . He was then a member of an Anglo-French expedition, which brought extensive knowledge about the usefulness of the Río Paraná for commercial shipping.

In 1851/52 he joined William Kennedy's expedition , which set out on the Prince Albert to find the missing John Franklin . Although this project could not be achieved, a waterway was discovered instead, which Kennedy named after the French Bellotstrasse . In 1853 , Bellot , who had meanwhile been promoted to lieutenant , participated again in a search mission for John Franklin, this time alongside Edward A. Inglefield . The search for Franklin was again unsuccessful. When he wanted to bring letters to Edward Belcher's Assistance , he came across a floating ice floe on August 17th while marching across the pack ice of the Wellington Canal with two men . When he wanted to investigate the situation the next morning, he disappeared, only his stick was found on a neighboring floe. It is believed that he got into a crevice between the clods and drowned.
