Sajukowo ( Russian Заю́ково ; Kabardian Зэикъуэ / Seiqwe ) is a village (selo) in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in Russia with 11,229 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The place is a good 25 km as the crow flies northwest of the republic capital Nalchik in the northern outskirts of the Greater Caucasus , the mountains of which rise in the vicinity up to about 1400  m . It stretches for almost 10 km along the mostly left bank of the Baksan River .

Sajukowo belongs to Rajon Baksanski and is located about 20 km southwest of the administrative center of Baksan . The village is the seat and only locality of the rural municipality (selskoje posselenije) Sajukowo.

history

In the early 19th century, the modern village lay on the territory of a number kabardinischer ( Circassian ) Aule , with the Russified name Borowo, Bschachowo, Chamgurowo, Chatukowo, Djumenowo, Kasanoko, Myschoko and Pschizukowo. 1830 they became the town Werchneje Ataschukino combined ( "upper-Ataschukino"), in contrast to the downstream (northeast) subsequent Ataschukino and after Kabardinian princes Chatokschuko Ataschukin. After the October Revolution , this name was abolished in 1920, as in many other Kabardian places, as a derivation from the name of a noble family and the village was called Sajukowo , Russified from the Cabardian-Circassian se (зэ) for cornel cherry and qwe ( къуэ ) for gorge, valley, So for example "Cornelian Cherry Gorge" .

The federal highway A158 runs through the village. Coming from Prochladny it crosses the R217 Kawkas near the town of Baksan and continues up the Baksan river via Tyrnyaus to Terskol below the Elbrus . The nearest train station is in Nalchik.
