The nuclear power plant Tatarstan ( Russian Татарская АЭС / Tatarskaya AES [ listen ? / I ]; Tatar nuclear power plant ) should be near the settlement Kamskije Polyany on the river Kama in the Tatar ASSR , now the Republic of Tatarstan , arise. The construction was stopped after a while. The resumption of construction was discussed again and again, but was most recently rejected - at least for this location - by the parliament of the Republic of Tatarstan with reference to ecological concerns. history

As part of the Soviet nuclear program, it was decided at the beginning of the 1980s to build a nuclear power plant either at Kuibyshev (not to be confused with the metropolis of the same name, today's Samara ) or at Kamskije Polyany . Ultimately, the choice fell on Kamskije Polyany because an examination of the locations revealed in particular a deficient infrastructure in the area around Kuibyshev. In addition to the town itself, the cities of Naberezhnye Chelny , Nizhnekamsk and Chistopol supported the construction of the power plant near Kamskije Polyany , as they hoped for economic sources of income and better connections to the power grid. After the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the power plant was to become the new model plant and showcase project and was therefore referred to as the project of the millennium in the Soviet Union . The construction plans for the power plant were completed on April 1, 1987. Construction of the first block began on the same day. On May 1, 1988, construction began on the second block. During the construction, the Kamskije Polyany settlement was expanded to provide enough housing for the workers of the power plant.

In 1990 the cost had risen to 96-100 million rubles a year. During this time, around 1,000 people worked on the power plant's construction site. Work was carried out around the clock in order to implement the project as quickly as possible. However, the construction of the reactor buildings went very slowly. During this time, the majority of the apartments and the cooling water treatment system had already been completed. The cooling lake of the power plant was still under construction at that time. Ultimately, the project was abandoned as the construction became too expensive and the organization of the construction failed. In the planning phase alone, the project devoured over 288 million rubles and during the construction period around 700 million rubles. At this point in time, the power plant was only 25% complete.
