The Sosnovy Bor nuclear power plant ( Russian Сосновый Бор АЭС ) (also Northwest Scientific-Industrial Center for Atomic Energy ), not to be confused with the adjacent Leningrad and Leningrad II nuclear power plants , was to be built in Russia near the city of Sosnovy Bor . It should be the first prototype of the VVER-640/407 . However, the construction was stopped.

history

The reactor was designed for a service life of 50 to 60 years instead of the usual 25 to 30 years at VVER. On August 16, 1996, according to a report in the Kommersant-daily , it was announced that the construction of the power plant had started in cooperation with the German Kraftwerk Union (later Areva ). The Russian government paid five percent of the costs, the rest was financed by loans and Rosenergoatom . The reactor should have a thermal output of 1,800 megawatts and a gross electrical output of 630 megawatts.

On December 27, 1997, the Greenpeace organization protested against the reactor. It was said that Minatom violated environmental protection laws in the construction. January 1999 already $ 1.05 billion was invested in the project. Shortly afterwards the project was abandoned. However, there are other plans for the reactor.
