The Yamantau ( Russian Ямантау , Bashkir мантау - useless or bad mountain ) is the highest mountain in the southern Urals at 1640 m . It is located in the Republic of Bashkortostan, which is part of Russia, on the border with Chelyabinsk Oblast . Near the mountain is the Shulgan-Tash nature reserve and the Kapowa cave, known for its Stone Age paintings . The mountain has a double peak , in addition to the large one, there is also the small Jamantau ( 1510 m ) as a secondary peak .
Military complex and conspiracy theories
The Yamantau became famous in the USA as a result of a conspiracy theory launched in conservative circles , according to which it is regarded as a Russian counterpart to the legendary Area 51 . According to local beliefs, it is home to a huge underground complex from the Brezhnev era that would have monumental dimensions.
The existence of military installations of the Russian army in the nearby closed cities of Meschgorje and Sneschinsk is certain . Furthermore, there should actually be a secret, atomic bomb-proof bunker under the mountain. According to US sources, the complex there should offer space for 60,000 people. Nuclear weapons research should also be carried out there.
