Thomas Mertens

Thomas Mertens (born March 10, 1950 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German doctor, virologist and university professor.

Mertens is Professor of Virology at Ulm University and Medical Director of the Institute for Virology at Ulm University Hospital . As a virologist, he is also chairman of the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), former president of the Society for Virology and a member of the AWMF guidelines commission and the Association for Biology, Biosciences and Biomedicine in Germany . Mertens is also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the German Liver Foundation .

Thomas Mertens is an expert on herpes viruses and has been researching human cytomegaloviruses ( HCMV ) for years . His work includes viral morphogenesis , immunology and resistance development in HCMV. Thomas Mertens is also head of the consulting laboratory for HCMV within the national reference network of the Robert Koch Institute.
