Russia.news (spelling: russland.NEWS , until June 2016 russland.RU ) is a German-language online newspaper about Russia that has been in existence since 1999 and is published in Hanover . According to its own account, it is the largest online medium about Russia in German that is independent of the Russian state media and refers to its dissemination in social networks. Russia.news has been running the web television Russia.tv as its own service since 2007. Up until 2017, Russland.news was based in Russia (Tarusa, Kaluga region) and registered as a mass medium.

history

Early Years (1996-2007)

Russland.ru went to a three-year lead time with irregular News Publications in 1999 as the first German-language Russia-based Internet newspaper online and had originally called The Moscow City Journal . At that time it was essentially a project of Germans living abroad from Moscow and Tarusa living in Russia . Since then, the newspaper has presented up-to-date information from Russia in German. The name "Russland.ru", which it carried until 2016, was given to the newspaper in autumn 2002. Between 2000 and 2003, the German-Russian press agency " RUFO ", under the direction of Gisbert Mrozek, was a partner of russland.RU, who was also responsible for Spiegel Online wrote. In 2003 there was an argument and separation. RUFO then operated the then discontinued rival newspaper Russland-Aktuell until 2016 . One consequence of the split was a legal dispute lasting several years, including over the main domain of the online newspaper, which was decided by the Russian judiciary in autumn 2004 in favor of the operator from Tarusa.

In 2003, "Russland.ru" decided to cooperate with the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti and made news against the mainstream of the German press its motto. As a result, the German-language service of RIA Novosti provided a portion of the newspaper's articles until 2009. Another comes from the French news agency AFP as well as the Georgien-Nachrichten and regional partners from Russia.ru in various Russian cities. At the end of 2003, the site had more than a million page views for the first time.

In March 2004, Russland.ru was registered as a mass medium with the Russian Press Ministry. In the following two years the number of hits on the newspaper and its projects doubled and in February 2005 it reached four million page impressions. Subsequently, authors of books on Russia and scientists specializing in Russia wrote for the online magazine. It was able to maintain its market leadership and was also quoted by major media.

Establishing Internet TV and changing partnerships (2007–2012)

In autumn 2007, Russland.ru founded a video portal for Internet TV under the name of Russland.tv . It presents film clips from Russia in the areas of politics, culture, travel and business in German. Furthermore, topics from Germany with a connection to Russia (tours by Russian artists, integration of ethnic repatriates ) are dealt with. Some of the films published consisted of film material from Russia Today in German-language productions from 2009 to mid-2013 . Further reports were filmed by our own teams in Germany and Russia or provided by other suppliers. From 2007 to 2012 rusland.RU operated the repatriate community Russen-Chat

At the beginning of 2009, russland.RU ended its cooperation with RIA Novosti as it gradually distanced itself from the Russian government press. Later the video production was shifted more to self-produced material. Since then, the focus of the offer has been independent reporting from Russia, especially on the video offer. The video editing was expanded in this context. In addition to news clips on daily politics in relation to Russia, these are primarily infotainment contributions that are divided into broadcast formats. One focus is initially on documentaries from Russia, Germany (with a connection to Russia) and the CIS countries as well as sports and cultural topics. In 2010 russland.TV was nominated as the most innovative format for the German IPTV Award of the German IPTV Association.

In 2009 russland.RU established partnerships with the regional German-language online newspaper Sankt Petersburger Herold and in 2010 with YouTube . russland.RU has been part of the Flattr network since 2010 and presents selected films as video podcasts in the iTunes Store . In 2011 russland.TV was nominated again for the German IPTV Award in the category "Most Creative Format".

New portal and crisis reports (2013-2015)

In 2013 new portals were put into operation. At times, a partnership was established with the information agency Kaliningrad Domizil . From 2013 onwards, selected videos from other providers will also be embedded on your own site, but the videos will no longer be offered on your own server, but only via YouTube. russland.RU took over the online presentation of the partner country Russia at the Hanover Fair 2013 and at the same time set up additional pages in social networks. In 2013 russland.TV was nominated for the German IPTV Award as "Most Creative Format", but failed to win it again.

russland.RU-Logo 2013-2016

In 2014 russland.RU carried out its own coverage of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, which included a critical observation of German coverage. However, from 2013 onwards, the newspaper is increasingly differentiating itself from the Russian government-loyal media, which it also criticizes for its cooperation with German right-wing populists, through reports on Internet censorship in Russia or critical analyzes of government policy and freedom of expression in the country. For Sochi reporting, russland.RU operated a special site under its own domain.

Russland.RU 2014 also focuses on reporting on the Ukraine crisis and Russian participation in the Syrian war . From 2014 to 2017, the previous long-time editor-in-chief Hans-Ullrich Berger was temporarily replaced by Michael Barth.

Current development (from 2015)

At russland.TV, the online newspaper has been cooperating with presenters with their own broadcast formats since the end of 2014. From 2015, these were replaced by local Russian editors who are themselves significantly involved in the content of the videos they moderate and who report independently from their hometowns Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The main news format, Russland.direct, has been published weekly from Moscow since 2015. Above all, experts in international relations, politicians and journalists are interviewed here (see below under "Guests in Contributions"). Julia Dudnik from Moscow, MGIMO's Masters graduate, has been responsible for the program and its moderation since 2016 . Since 2020, some of her contributions have also been produced in Russian for the local audience. In February 2016, the editor of the English and Norwegian-language edition Ulrich Kreuzenbeck died, so that Gunnar Juette has been the sole editor of the publications since then. The foreign language editions were then discontinued. The remaining Russian-language offer can be found on the German side

In mid-2016, Russland.RU introduced an advertising-free paid offer and at the same time as a new name for the online newspaper russland.NEWS, while russland.RU became the umbrella brand for all projects. In 2017, the newspaper installed an audio podcast with political contributions and founded the Russland.RU publishing house in Hanover, thereby relocating its place of publication from Russia to Germany. In 2018, the Russland.RU-Verlag took over the Russia controversial portal, the content of which consists primarily of analyzes by experts such as Gabriele Krone-Schmalz .

editorial staff

structure

There is an editorial office for articles and the online newspaper under the editor-in-chief ("Russland.news") as well as a separate, three-person video editor ("Russland.tv"). The video editor manages a YouTube channel with (as of April 2019) 24 million views and 50,000 subscribers. The newspaper also maintains specialist editions with business and travel news as well as expert opinions under the names Russland.capital, Russland.reisen and Russlandkontrovers. Russia.NEWS has its own appearance on Facebook , Instagram , Pinterest , Telegram , Vkontakte and Twitter .

In previous years, the online newspaper operated the online newspapers Kazakhstan.kz and Sotschi 2014.ru, which had since been discontinued, the former youth projects Russland.cool and Russenchat as well as English and Norwegian-language editions.

Ownership

The newspaper is financed through advertising income, donations, commissions (including product placement in videos) and its own online shop. The newspaper and the related domains have been owned by russland.RU Verlag in Hanover since 2017, before that of the publisher Gunnar Jütte., Since the co-editors died. Jütte also takes on the position of publisher under russland.RU Verlag.

Goal setting

Russia.news has set itself the goal of reporting that is critical of that of the major German and Russian state media. The Germans are mainly criticized by the newspaper because the choice of topics is one-sided, many reporters have inadequate regional knowledge (see Russia picture ) and are relatively isolated from large parts of society there. “Russia.news” generally criticizes a postulate of the western reporters on site as free and independent media, while their own clients are also only supplied with the desired topics and opinions, as are the Russian journalists they attacked.

Russian German-speaking state media such as RT deutsch or Sputniknews refer to themselves as "alternative voices" in the opinion of the newspaper, but are again only part of the Russian mainstream and just as one-sided with regard to their image of Germany as the major German media on the subject of Russia. On the other hand, "Russia.news" claims for itself to ensure broad coverage from Russia and primarily relies on Russian media as sources outside of the state and semi-state providers.

The editor of "Russland.news" has been the German journalist Gunnar Juette, who has lived in Russia since 1992, and who previously worked for Die Tageszeitung in Berlin and as a freelance Russia correspondent for various print media. Until his death in 2016, the publisher of the earlier foreign-language editions was Murmansk- based journalist Ulrich Kreuzenbeck.

German and Russian journalists work for the newspaper in both countries, mostly in Russia. Prominent employees are the publicist Kai Ehlers and the journalist and book author Lothar Deeg . russland.NEWS is predominantly in the tradition of German foreign media , whereby local cooperation partners are also publications by German-speaking foreigners living in Russia. However, many Russian citizens are active in the video sector, such as the Moscow and Petersburg editors Julia Dudnik and Anna Smirnowa or Russian Germans such as the presenter Anna Gamburg from 2014 to 2016 . Julia Dudnik and previously Anna Gamburg moderate the central weekly news magazine Russland.direct, which now has over 200 issues and is published every Sunday.

Guests in posts

Prominent guests in video contributions, mostly in the context of Russia.direct, were Egon Bahr , Alexander Rahr , Matthias Platzeck , Sahra Wagenknecht , Gabriele Krone-Schmalz , Wolfgang Gehrcke , Dietmar Bartsch , the AfD dropout and author Franziska Schreiber , the Islamic scholar Udo Steinbach , the Austrian political scientist Gerhard Mangott , the RT moderator Jasmin Kosubek , the Russian commissioners of the federal government Dirk Wiese and Gernot Erler , the Russian human rights commissioner Michail Fedotow , the foreign policy advisor to Helmut Kohl, Horst Teltschik or in sport the world champions Evgenija Medvedeva , Jelisaweta ( Tuktamysheveta both figure skating) and Jana Kudrjawzewa (rhythmic gymnastics)

Locations

"Russland.news" and before that "Russland.ru" appeared in Tarusa in the Kaluga region in Russia until 2017 and then became the property of the russland.RU publishing house in Hanover. Permanent editors of the newspaper also work in Moscow and Saint Petersburg . The newspaper receives news from Saint Petersburg in the article area via the partner magazine "Saint Petersburg Herold" and from Kaliningrad from the above. Information agency, the videos are produced by our own video editors from Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Russland.NEWS projects are often created jointly from different locations via the WWW; meetings of the editorial team or parts of them only take place annually in Germany, Russia or Norway. The reporting focuses primarily on the European part of Russia, the Eastern European CIS states and the Ural region .

Readers and viewers

According to the company's own information, based on statistics from the provider, the vast majority of the visitors to Russia.news come from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Only a minority consists of German-speaking foreigners or German-speaking natives in Russia (around 1% of readers). Other readers come from other CIS countries, the Baltic States and the Middle East. The viewers of the video contributions from Russia.tv, who are mostly from Germany and are middle-aged, have a similar composition, while hardly any teenagers watch the program.
