Gheorghe Tătaru (born May 5, 1948 in Bucharest , † December 19, 2004 in Iași ) was a Romanian football player . He played 272 games in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , and took part in the 1970 World Cup.

Career

Gheorghe Tătaru started playing football at Steaua Bucharest at the age of 11 . In 1967 he was accepted into the first team and played his first game in Divizia A on September 10, 1967 . With Steaua he had the most successful time of his career. In 1968 he won the Romanian championship, in 1969 and 1971 the Romanian cup. In 1971 he was also top scorer in Divizia A. After that, his star - like that of Steaua - began to decline. Tătaru get fewer hits, in the 1973/74 season only one, whereupon he came on fewer inserts. He then joined Chimia Râmnicu Vâlcea , who had just risen to Divizia A.

After relegation in 1975 Tătaru moved to CS Târgovişte in Divizia B , where he managed to return to the highest Romanian league in 1977. After relegation at the end of the 1979/80 season, he ended his career. Then Tătaru returned twice from retirement when he played in the 1981/82 season for Autobuzul Bucharest and in the 1983/84 season for Unirea Slobozia - each in Divizia B - played. At the time of his death he was a coach in the youth division of Steaua Bucharest.

National team

Tătaru completed 10 games for the Romanian national team . After being nominated for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico by national coach Angelo Niculescu without a previous international match, but as one of the most successful scorers of Divizia A, he made his debut on June 2, 1970 in the first game against England . In the following two matches he came on as a substitute.

Tătaru was not only a fine technician and successful goalscorer, but also a strong alcoholic . He died of a heart attack during a youth tournament.
