The Harzburg stud is located in Bündheim , Bad Harzburg in the Goslar district in Lower Saxony . It is the oldest operating German thoroughbred stud .

The stud was founded in 1413 by Bernhard I , ruler of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg .

Towards the end of his life, Luciano owned the stud, which made history as the most profitable racehorse of all time in Germany. The most important breeding stallion from November 2009 to October 2016 was Adlerflug , who grew up at the Schlenderhan Stud and earned over 600,000 euros. Adlerflug is also the namesake of the Adlerflug lounge on the nearby Bad Harzberg racetrack (Bündheim).

Other important horses are Katalos and Amico Fritz .

Todays situation

In 2016, the Norddeutsche Landesbank announced that it would withdraw from the breeding business. This initially threatened the existence of the more than 600 year old farm, the existence of which is mainly dependent on the stallion Adlerflug. At that time, Adlerflug was endowed with a value of 1.05 million euros. As a result, the spa, tourism and business operations of the city of Bad Harzburg GmbH founded Gestüt Harzburg GmbH , which is dedicated to the maintenance and the planned renovation of the stud grounds.

As of 2019, it is planned to outsource the stud farm to the edge of the Lindenbruchweg and transfer it piece by piece to the old building.
