The Vilna Troupe (English troup Vilnius Yiddish ווילנער טרופע Vilner trupe ) was a Jewish actor ensemble, which plays in Yiddish language played. It did not have its own permanent venue. The troupe was probably the most famous Yiddish theater in the United States and Western Europe and popularized Yiddish theater there.

history

In 1916 the troupe was probably formed from members of the disbanding Vilna State Theater. After performing in Grodno and Białystok , they soon settled in Warsaw . There they celebrated their first successes, u. a. with An-skis Der Dibbuk (1920). They soon toured regularly in England , France and the United States, where they became very popular.

From 1924 to 1927 the company made guest appearances in Romania . In 1929 Jakub Rotbaum joined the group and tried to establish a social and political theater in Poland and to remove the restriction to Jewish topics.

In the wake of the global economic crisis , the troop disbanded in 1935.
