Thomas Reinhold

Thomas Reinhold (* 1953 in Vienna ) is an Austrian painter .

Life

Reinhold studied from 1974 to 1978 at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Herbert Tasquil . During his studies he came out with poetic, magical, photographic and painterly pictorial inventions, which, among other things, dealt with the representational nature of the image. At the end of the 1970s he initiated the Neue Wilde in Austria together with Siegfried Anzinger , Erwin Bohatsch , Alfred Klinkan and Hubert Schmalix , but in the mid-1980s he turned to media-reflective aspects of painting and photography, which still shape his work today.

Reinhold lives in Vienna.

Reinhold's sometimes large-format oil painting testifies to a concentration on the fundamental specifics of the medium of painting, that is, color and its materiality, as well as surface and space. The creation process of the painting and its temporality is thematized through overlays and layers of color forms. These superimpositions call on the viewer to an almost archaeological way of seeing in order to be able to grasp the resulting image space. In 2011 the group of works Tectonics of Suspension was created . The topic reflects their development process. The dead center forms the liquid color, allowing a regularity between the decisions for a few moments. The painterly approach, which essentially consists of shifting the focus, provokes precisely this moment, which lets the indeterminacy take shape. The intermediate area becomes the place of interest, in which forms emerge that appear to be suspended between rivulets.

photography

Reinhold's preoccupation with the medium of photography started early in his work. In his “Ferris Wheel Series” from 1977, the factors of space, time and sequence represent the fundamental theme, aspects that Reinhold also thematizes in his painting. The Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel in the Vienna Prater as the central motif becomes the starting point for dealing with mobility and immobility, object and image. The photo series Painting Light, Living Shadows was created in 2010 during Reinhold's three-month stay in Shanghai . In this media-reflective work, picturesque photographs are juxtaposed with photographic-shadow-like ink paintings . Both the motifs of the photos and the technology used create a specific reference to the place of origin.

Art in public space

In 1999 Reinhold was commissioned to design the windows of the Chapelle de la Résurrection in Brussels , which was carried out in 2002 together with the Schlierbach glass painting workshop . The transparency of the windows made using melting technology creates a “visual model” for what is in front of and behind, the superimposition of structures, the side by side in relation to one another. This enables the viewer to locate his or her location. The view outside mixes the floating, picturesque layer with the facades of the European government buildings opposite; Trees, a piece of lawn, cars passing by and passers-by also contribute in their movement, color and shape as underlying “layers of reality” to an overall picture.
