The hardwood hornling or awl-shaped hornling ( Calocera cornea ) is a fungus from the family of gelatinous tears (Dacrymycetaceae). In addition to other similarly shaped mushrooms, it is also known under the ambiguous name " goatee ". It is a close relative of the sticky horn and grows widespread on dead hardwood. It is significantly smaller than its cousin, which is common on softwood. Both species feed saprobiontisch of dead wood .

In contrast to corals, the coral- like fruiting body consists of tough, gelatinous flesh.

The only two-pored basidia are elongated and forked.

The hardwood hornling fructifies from June / July until the onset of winter in November on damp, dead hardwood.

Food value

The hardwood squirrel is not poisonous. However, due to its small size and toughness, it is not suitable as an edible mushroom .
