Hans Gabor

Hans Gabor (born July 5, 1924 in Budapest , † September 4, 1994 in Biarritz ) was an Austrian conductor of Hungarian origin who worked primarily in Austria and founded and directed the Vienna Chamber Opera .

biography

Gabor studied at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest with Zoltán Kodály , Béla Bartók and János Ferencsik, among others . In 1946 he moved to Vienna, where he received Austrian citizenship after the failed Hungarian uprising in October 1956 denied him access to his homeland.

In 1948 the conductor initiated the Vienna Opera Studio , a guest ensemble without a house. With this he toured in Austria and other European countries until 1950. Among others, the following singers took part: Walter Berry , Fritz Uhl and Eberhard Waechter .

In 1953 he founded the Chamber Opera, initially an ensemble without a permanent venue, but the Schönbrunn Palace Theater could be used for performances over the summer .

Since 1961, Gabor was able to use a concert and ballroom of the Hotel Post am Fleischmarkt , which was adapted as a theater .

In 1982 he initiated the Belvedere Singing Competition , and in 1995 it was renamed the Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition .
