Sebastian F. Schwarz (born March 5, 1974 in Rostock ) is an internationally active opera manager from Germany .

Career

Schwarz began in 1992 as a trainee director, later as an assistant, then until 1994 as a stage manager in the music theater division of the Rostock Volkstheater . During a two-year stay in Moscow , he was responsible for public relations at the local Helikon Opera . He then studied musicology (as well as American studies and Russian culture) at the Free University of Berlin . He continued his vocal studies, which he began in Berlin, from 1998 at the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice . In 2002 he graduated from the Università Ca 'Foscari di Venezia with a degree in theater management . From 2000 to 2006 he worked as a language coach for the German, Russian and English language opera productions at the Teatro La Fenice and as assistant to Kevin Farrell for George Gershwin's Lady, Be Good . He also taught Venetian History and Serenissima Music History at Trinity College, Hartford, CT during these years .

From 2002 to 2004, Schwarz was head of the opera department at Walter Beloch Artists Management in Milan , then with his own agency Cantus Artists Management . Since then he has worked with major opera houses and artists around the world. In 2004 he moved to company management at the Irish Wexford Festival Opera .

In 2007, Schwarz became assistant to the opera director of the Hamburg State Opera ( Josef Hussek ), and from 2008 to 2016 he was the artistic director of the Theater an der Wien, among other things, responsible for the cast of singers (director: Roland Geyer ).

From 2012 to 2016, Schwarz was also managing director and artistic director of the Vienna Chamber Opera , where he was responsible for 15 opera productions. Schwarz is co-founder and jury chairman of the Cesti competition at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music . He is also active as a juror in international singing competitions and teaches master classes in America and Russia.

Schwarz was General Director of the Glyndebourne Opera Festival from November 2015 until his resignation in December 2017 .

In July 2019, the Italian Minister of Culture confirmed his appointment as Sovrintendente (General Director ) of the Royal Theater of Turin, Teatro Regio di Torino , which he also chairs as Artistic Director.

In 2015, Schwarz was made Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy by the Italian President in recognition of his efforts to promote Italian culture.
