The anti-aircraft regiment 5 was a unit of the Army Air Defense Force of the Bundeswehr , which belonged to the 5th Panzer Division in Diez and was disbanded in 1993.

Positioning and development

From August 1, 1956, the PzFlakArtBtl 5 was set up in Grafenwöhr in the Upper Palatinate and received its first conscripts on April 1, 1957 . The first in command was Lieutenant Colonel Ziegler. This gave the young association a staffing strength of 27 officers , 108 non-commissioned officers and 640 men . In the spring of 1957 he moved to Koblenz-Pfaffendorf ( Augusta barracks ), was renamed Anti-Aircraft Battalion 5 and subordinated to the 5th Panzer Division. On September 1, 1965, the battalion was relocated to the brand new Rheingau barracks in Lorch . The Ranselberg armed forces settlement was built next to the barracks . In July 1973 there was another reclassification. Two batteries were passed to Marburg and formed the 1. / and 2./FlaBtl 310 there. On July 1, 1979, the battalion grew as part of the reclassification to Army Structure 4 to become an anti-aircraft regiment, which now consists of eight batteries - including six gun batteries - duration. These were equipped with the Gepard flak tank .

The regiment was disbanded on March 31, 1993 due to the changed political situation.

assignment

The task of the anti-aircraft regiment was to fight low-flying enemy aircraft over the division area and primarily to protect combat and combat support troops as well as objects of the division that were important for the conduct of operations .

equipment

In December 1956 the equipment of the Btl consisted of twelve quadruple guns 12.7 mm on M16 from US stocks. In 1958 it was converted to the M42 Duster , a 40 mm twin cannon on a self-propelled gun. At the end of 1961, 4./FlaBtl 5 received the new weapon system anti-aircraft gun 40 mm L / 70 . The 40 mm anti-aircraft guns remotely controlled by the Deiswil VII B “Super Fledermaus” fire control device enabled the battalion to conduct the fire fight at night. In 1973 the Fliegerfaust 1 "Red Eye" was introduced. On December 27, 1979, the conversion to FlaPz 1 Gepard began . From May 1980, FlaRgt 5 was a pure cheetah regiment. In August 1980 the first TPz 1 Fuchs was delivered as a command vehicle to FlaRgt 5.
