Life

Gertrude Wondrack was a seamstress by trade. She joined the SPÖ in 1945. 1946/1947 she worked in the Adlmüller fashion salon in Vienna. When there were union problems there and Wondrack wanted to be fired, she got involved in the union of textile, clothing and leather workers, for which she worked from 1948 to 1963. Since January 1, 1964, she was Federal Women's Secretary of the SPÖ. From 1964 to 1966 she was a member of the Federal Council as a representative of Vienna , then from 1966 to 1971 she was a member of the National Council and chairman of its social committee. She was a member of the federal party executive committee of the SPÖ.

Chancellor Bruno Kreisky appointed her to his first government in April 1970 after his election victory , as State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Social Administration headed by Vice Chancellor Rudolf Häuser . In this role she was primarily responsible for public health and was strongly committed to the interests of working women.

On the way back from an appointment in Villach , her company car had a head-on collision on the border between Carinthia and Styria in the summer of 1971, after the car hit the opposite lane on a wet road. Gertrude Wondrack was thrown through the windshield as the passenger and was instantly dead. Two people died in the other car; Wondrack's chauffeur survived the accident.
