The European Cartel Association of Christian Student Associations ( EKV ) is an association of various umbrella organizations of Christian student associations in Europe . 120,000 academics, schoolchildren and students are organized within the EKV.

history

In 1970 the chairmen of the (German) Technical Cartel Association (TCV) and the (Austrian) Middle Schools Cartel Association ( MKV ) initiated the establishment. The EKV was formally founded on November 15, 1975. This happened at Schloss Kleßheim in Salzburg by the TCV, the MKV, the Cartell Association of the Catholic Austrian Student Associations ( ÖCV ), the Cartell Association of the German Catholic Student Associations ( CV ), the Ring of Catholic Academic Fraternities ( RKAB ), the South Tyrolean Middle School Association (StMV) and the Ring of Catholic German Fraternities ( RKDB ). The first chairman was Hans Walther Kaluza (MKV, ÖCV). The EKV has had consultative status (in its capacity as an NGO ) with the Council of Europe since 1985 . The main focus of the work of the EKV lies in the area of interest representation for the areas of education, training and information. To this end, educational policy conferences and six European student days have been held so far. In 2003 the association became a registered association under the official name EKV e. V. , in 2011 the association's headquarters were relocated from Aachen to Vienna .

Members

Members are currently 15 associations as well as the so-called curia of the free associations in the EKV , thus a total of around 120,000 academics, students and schoolchildren are organized in around 675 associations within the EKV. The Curia unites 19 associations that do not belong to any umbrella organization of the EKV. The EKV brings together cross-denominational Catholic, Protestant and Christian umbrella organizations and associations of students and pupils. They come from Germany , Austria , Switzerland , Belgium , France , Italy , Lithuania , Poland , Hungary , the Czech Republic , Slovakia , Slovenia , Ukraine and Romania . In the member associations of the EKV there are all-women and all-men associations, as well as mixed associations. There are both colored and non-colored compounds.

The Keresztény Diákegyesülletek Kartellszövetsége (KEDEX), the Hungarian student association, was also a member of the EKV until it was suspended. The Flemish KVHV disbanded on February 16, 2015 following internal disputes and is therefore no longer in existence. A successor association ( KVSR ) is currently being created. Numerous proponents of this successor association were functionaries in the EKV. The KVSR joined the EKV on October 7, 2017 in Vilnius.

tasks

The statutes of the EKV contain the following tasks for the working group:

  • representation in and towards European institutions,
  • the creation, promotion and coordination of initiatives, especially in the sector of education and social policy in the European area,
  • the transfer of information between the European institutions and the member associations,
  • the observation of intellectual and socio-political developments in Europe,
  • promoting cooperation between member associations,
  • active participation in the redesign of Europe.

The EKV oversees several charitable projects, including “Language Connects” in the Ukraine. In this project, children from socially disadvantaged families are encouraged and supported all year round. The summer camp, which is particularly important for the project, always takes place in August in Ternopil.

criticism

Exceeding the competences
envisaged for
the EKV. Organizationally, the aim is only a coordinating function of the EKV between the member associations, whereas direct contact between member associations of different member associations is not provided. Furthermore, the content of the activity is limited to the topic of education. Activities in the field of cultivating religion and friendship are not part of the EKV's area of responsibility. Corporate elements are also not provided. There are no rules on Duzen (the so-called "cartel brotherly you"), members of different associations of different umbrella organizations are not required to address each other with cartel brother or sister; Neither are the wearing of their own EKV functional ribbons, the charging of EKV officials and mutual presence, visiting or membership rights of individual members of the umbrella organizations planned or regulated, nor is the use of an EKV emblem. Even if this has already been practiced in the EKV for a number of years, it meets with rejection and criticism in the more conservative associations, as it contradicts the comment maintained there .

Discussion about the admission of women into the member associations
The board of directors should not violate the autonomy of the member associations provided for in the statutes. The member associations sometimes react with excessive sensitivity to alleged violations of this autonomy. This happened for instance in connection to a personally subscribed calling the EKV-Altvizepräsidenten and EKV-Euro parathyroid delegates Bernhard age Matt from the Swiss Studentenverein ( SchwStV ) in association magazine Academia the German Cartellverbandes , no. 2006/01 (page 43). In the spirit of the Swiss Student Union, which has given its member associations the freedom to accept female students since 1968, Bernhard Altermatt suggested reforms in this regard in the Austrian and German EKV member associations. The food for thought in his comments was the repeated wish that the EKV should seek more funding in Brussels, but that in view of the principle of so-called gender mainstreaming, which is a central criterion of European institutions in all project submissions, the EKV is disadvantaged when it comes to awarding funds . Several associations within the EKV accept students, including the Swiss (SchwStV, with the exception of the so-called "block") and the Flemish associations KVHV and KVSR . In clear contrast, can in most members of the Association by far EKV, the Cartellverband , "only enrolled male Catholic students are taken." (Wording of Section 27 of the Cartel Regulation). Even if other associations have allowed women to join their member associations, the Cartell Association sees no need to shake its traditional principle.
