The association was originally primarily represented at the earlier engineering schools that were solely responsible for the training of engineers in the 19th and early 20th centuries . After this in the second half of the 20th century increasingly in universities of applied sciences and later z. Some of them were converted into comprehensive colleges and universities , the TCV also opened up for non-technical subjects. In the meantime, students from numerous departments belong to the TCV associations, but the focus is still on technical courses. The term "technical" as part of the name was retained as a tradition. Numerous connections also have the designation "Catholic Technical Connection" (KTV) in front of the name, although most of the TCV connections (with the consent of the association) have also opened up to non-Catholic Christians on an equal basis. Since 2016 the TCV has opened up all over Europe, which means that non-German student associations can also join the TCV.

The TCV is a member of the Central Association of Engineering Associations .

history

The TCV was founded in 1903 in Cologne during the Katholikentag by the KTV Ripuaria Bingen and the KTV Unitas Strelitz after the Cartell Association (CV) refused to take up student associations at the engineering schools that were not recognized as "academic" at the time. The problem was that the Abitur was not a mandatory requirement for studying at the technical colleges and commercial colleges of the time and was therefore not regarded as having equal rights to studying at the universities. With the increasing academic process of the technical universities , the maturity principle became binding for many of these universities.

Himmler decree of June 20, 1938 to dissolve the TCV and other associations

After the self-dissolution forced under National Socialism in 1936 , it rose again in 1951 .

In 1972 an association agreement was signed with the CV. While the Working Group of Catholic Student Associations was founded with other associations in 1974 , the TCV played a leading role in founding the European Cartel Association of Christian Student Associations (EKV) in 1975 .

In 2003 the TCV celebrated its 100th anniversary with a ceremony in Bingen am Rhein .

In 2018, the first connection based in Austria (CEStV Europe) was included in the TCV.
