The Ring of Katholischer Deutscher Burschenschaften (RKDB) is a corporations association of Catholic color-bearing and non-striking student associations in Germany with its seat in Bonn . The connections carry the designation Catholic German Burschenschaft in the RKDB . His motto is Deo patriae amico sacer , the principles are virtus, scientia, amicitia .

The Catholic fraternities in Austria, which originally belonged to the RKDB, formed in 1965 in the independent, but still closely linked, ring of Catholic academic fraternities (RKAB) .

history

1924 to 1945

Corporations banned from July 6, 1938

The RKDB was founded on October 9, 1924 in Düsseldorf by five associations that split off from the Unitas Association (Association of Scientific Catholic Student Associations Unitas ): Sigfridia Bonn, Normannia Freiburg (newly founded from Unitas-Rheno-Danubia Freiburg), Franco- Borussia Würzburg, Ripuaria Aachen and Gothia Berlin.

The name initially chosen, the Ring of Scientific Catholic German Student Associations (RV) , was replaced on April 19, 1926 by the Ring of Catholic German Fraternities RKDB .

In the years that followed, the association experienced rapid growth under its commitment to the doctrine of the Catholic Church and the Greater German idea . In 1933 it comprised 21 German and Austrian associations with 700 students and 500 old men .

Under pressure from the National Socialists , the so-called "Frankfurt Agreement" merged on September 3, 1933, between the RKDB and the Cartel Association of Catholic German Student Associations (KV) to form the Catholic German Burschenschaft (KB). On January 31, 1934, the Catholic principle had to be given up. Therefore the association renamed itself accordingly in Kartellverband Deutscher Burschenschaftlicherverbindungen.

On November 20, 1935, the forcibly merged and unstable association in Hanover dissolved again after some former ring fraternities had previously reconstituted the RKDB on March 31, 1935 under the name Ring-Kartell Deutscher Burschenschaften. The final end came for the association after the so-called " Himmler Decree of June 20, 1938 " with the state police dissolution on July 6, 1938.

From 1945

After the re-establishment of the association in Düsseldorf on November 6, 1948, the greater German idea was discarded and the statute stipulated that one should work for the unity and freedom of the Germans. After German reunification , the RKDB encompasses its social commitment and its status in the community by further advocating an internally united Germany in a united Europe, a goal that was pursued in particular from 1990 to 2009 with prominent participation from church, politics, business and Science conducted Wartburg discussions at the Wartburg in Eisenach took into account.

Today the RKDB is an educational, living and action community that understands itself as a catholic association with the goal of Christian ecumenism and is committed to overcoming the denominational division of Christians . Since 1970, corporations have been allowed to accept Protestant fellow students as full members while maintaining the Catholic principle.

In 2011 a friendship agreement was signed with CStV Unitas Hildburghausen zu Wuppertal.

Regardless of the location of the ring fraternities, there are 16 ring round tables and ring circles across Europe, which are worn and attended by members of all ring fraternities based in the area.

In 2001 the ring aid organization in the RKDB e. V. founded with the task of running student aid (currently in Bosnia ); since 2007 in partnership with the church aid organization Renovabis .

The association belongs to the Working Group of Catholic Student Associations (AGV) , the Working Group of Catholic Organizations in Germany (AGKOD) and the Catholic Academic Work of Germany (KAD) and is a founding member of the European Cartel Association (EKV) .

The association meets annually for its ring day (often in Bonn ) and, if possible, throughout the year for a ring friendship meeting at a cartel fraternity and a ring work day with working sessions on the principles of the association.

After changing periods of flourishing and stagnation, the RKDB currently (2015) consists of 600 old men and 80 active members.

Development in Austria after 1965

The passage in the statutes of the RKDB "to work for the unity and freedom of the Germans" presented the RKDB connections in Austria with the problem of exposing themselves to the accusation of continuing to follow the Greater German idea if they remained in the association; consequently they split off from the Federal German Association. In 1965, Wiking Vienna, Rheno-Danubia Vienna, Vedunia Vienna and Südgau Graz founded the Ring of Catholic Academic Fraternities (RKAB) . In the connection name, too, "German" has been replaced by "academic", which is why the connections are called the Catholic Academic Fraternity in the RKAB . Initially, a joint umbrella organization ( Ring Catholic Fraternities (RKB) ) was founded with the RKDB , but it was dissolved in 1980 and replaced in 1983 by a friendship agreement.

Large parts of the statutes, the motto, the principles and the denominational model were adopted by the RKDB; analogous to the resolution in the RKDB, Austrian corporations are also officially allowed to accept Christian baptized fellow students as full members.

After the RKAB temporarily ceased operations, it was reactivated in 1983 by Wiking Vienna, Rheno-Danubia Vienna and Langobardia Salzburg . Today the association has two connections with Aktivitas again and otherwise consists of old rulers.

The RKAB is also a founding member of the European Cartel Association (EKV).

Association magazine

The newsletter since 1924 is “Der RING”, which has been published since 1965 together with the Austrian sister association RKAB.

Ring aid organization

In 2001, the Ringhilfswerk im Ring Katholischer Deutscher Burschenschaften eV was founded from circles of the RKDB as a registered, later recognized non-profit association. The purpose of the association is to promote young people through education, upbringing and social security. Projects with a focus on Eastern Europe are financially supported by various partners.

The first project was initiated by the BDKJ of the Archdiocese of Cologne and enabled individual help for needy students in Lithuania, as well as support for the local Catholic youth and student association. It was planned to support the Lithuanian social welfare organization Patria through personal contacts, but this was no longer supported by the BDKJ, but rather took place through the German Province of the Jesuits . In 2007 the church aid organization Renovabis was won as a partner. After the structures in Lithuania have been consolidated, the funding will also be borne directly by the Archdiocese of Kaunas. From 2011, the Archdiocese of Sarajevo will be supervised with its work "Schools for Europe", as well as the award of scholarships for Bosnian students, organized locally by the FONSS Foundation (Fondacija za Stipendiranje Studenata).
