Political career

Gerald Loacker took on his first political function as a member of the Dornbirn city council for the Austrian People's Party in 2001. In 2002, Loacker wanted to run for the first time as a member of the National Council for the Vorarlberg regional constituency in Vorarlberg Nord and therefore applied for a top position within the party ÖVP list. About his rival for this place, later Member of Parliament Anna Franz , Loacker said ahead of the party's internal voting public "In an urban constituency as here in the regional constituency Nord is a young executive from the industry certainly the fresher signal as a 50-year-old teacher. “Gerald Loacker was severely reprimanded internally for this statement and then withdrew his candidacy for the top spot in the constituency.

From April 2010 to January 2013 he was again a substitute member of the city council for the ÖVP before he left the party to become Vorarlberg state spokesman for the newly founded NEOS - Das Neue Österreich party . As such, he ran for the National Council election in Austria 2013 in second place on the NEOS state list in Vorarlberg, behind top candidate Matthias Strolz . He renounced his state list mandate, so Loacker became a member of the Vorarlberg state electoral district at the beginning of the legislative period , where NEOS was able to achieve 13.1% of the votes. On October 29, 2013, Gerald Loacker was sworn in as one of nine NEOS MPs in the National Council. In the 2017 National Council election , Loacker ran again for NEOS, both in the Vorarlberg Nord regional constituency and on the state and federal lists. After the party was only able to achieve 9.0% of the votes in Vorarlberg in this election, it did not receive a basic mandate at regional or state constituency level. Gerald Loacker therefore moved into the National Council of the 26th legislative period as a member of the NEOS federal election proposal.

In the municipal council and mayoral elections in 2015 , Loacker ran for the first time against his former political home, the Dornbirn People's Party. The Dornbirn NEOS also put him in the running as a candidate for mayor, but only received 4.43% of the votes in the direct election and thus even fewer than the NEOS received in terms of community representatives (5.66%). After the election, he became one of two NEOS mandataries in the Dornbirn city council. In December 2017 he resigned from his mandate as a member of the Dornbirn city council and became a substitute member of the Dornbirn city council in January 2018.

In the 2019 National Council election , Loacker succeeded again as in 2013 with a basic mandate in the Vorarlberg state electoral district .
