Bernd Helmut Westphal (* the 30th September 1960 in Hildesheim ) is a German politician of the SPD . Since October 22, 2013 he has been a member of the German Bundestag and is the economic and energy policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group.

Career

Westphal grew up in Giesen , where he attended kindergarten and elementary school. At the Schiller Realschule in Sarstedt he received the extended secondary qualification I. He then trained as a chemical laboratory technician, after completing his training he became an employee in the Siegfried-Giesen potash mine of K + S AG on a permanent basis . There he was responsible as a laboratory assistant for production monitoring in three-shift operation. From 1982 to 1983 he did his military service with the medical battalion 1 in Hildesheim. Later he trained as a business statistician and worked again at K + S in Giesen, this time in the accounting department. From 1992 to 1993 he studied at the Social Academy in Dortmund , after which he became a full-time trade union secretary of IG Bergbau und Energie , of which he was a member from 1978, which later became part of IG Bergbau, Chemie, Energie . In 2005 he became the executive secretary of IG BCE at the headquarters in Hanover . In the trade union area, he held other functions and commitments at German and European level.

Westphal is married and has three adult sons.

politics

In 1984 Westphal joined the SPD, whose chairman in the local association of the Giesen community he is still today. He is a member of the local council and is its financial policy spokesman. He is deputy chairman of the SPD subdistrict Hildesheim. In the 2013 Bundestag election he entered the German Bundestag via the SPD's state list in Lower Saxony, and in the 2017 Bundestag election he won the direct mandate in the Hildesheim constituency .

Bernd Westphal is a full member of the Economic and Energy Committee , a full member of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Sustainable Development , a full member of the Regional Economic Policy + ERP Economic Plans subcommittee, and a deputy member of the Health Committee .
