history

The Plochingen location around 1959
The Plochingen location in 2005

CeramTec was founded in 1903. At that time the Thomaswerke was established , which was taken over by Philipp Rosenthal & Co. AG in 1908 . From 1921 this cooperated with AEG in the field of technical porcelain. This partnership was deepened in 1936 in the field of technical ceramics, and Rosenthal Isolatoren GmbH , also known as RIG , was founded.

In 1971, as part of a reorganization of the cooperation, Rosenthal Stemag Technische Keramik GmbH was founded for the production of technical ceramics. This company was renamed Rosenthal Technik AG in 1974 , acquired by Hoechst AG in 1985 and from then on it was run as Hoechst CeramTec AG . In 1996, this was taken over by Cerasiv GmbH based in Plochingen, the newly formed company traded as CeramTec AG .

The location in Lauf an der Pegnitz goes back to the establishment of STEMAG AG (Steatit-Magnesia Aktiengesellschaft) in 1921. Initially incorporated into AEG in 1970, the company merged with Rosenthal Stemag Technische Keramik GmbH in 1971 as part of the reorganization of the partnership between Rosenthal and AEG .

Südplastik Gummi- und Kunststoffverarbeitung GmbH was established at the Plochingen location in 1951, and was taken over by Feldmühle AG in 1953 and renamed Südplastik und -keramik GmbH (SPK). In 1991 Feldmühle AG bundled its ceramic activities in the newly founded Cerasiv GmbH , but sold it to Metallgesellschaft AG as early as 1992 for integration into its subsidiary Dynamit Nobel AG . With the takeover of Hoechst CeramTec AG by Cerasiv GmbH in 1996, CeramTec AG was founded as a company of Metallgesellschaft AG (mg technologies AG).

Metallgesellschaft AG had to part with its Dynamit Nobel AG subgroup in 2004. Main buyer was the American financial investor KKR , of the parts of Dynamit Nobel AG in its participation Rockwood Holdings Inc. integrated. With this, CeramTec AG also became the property of the Rockwood Group based in Princeton (New Jersey) in the United States. CeramTec AG continued to grow as a company and in 2007 acquired Emil Müller GmbH in Wilhermsdorf, which was incorporated as a subsidiary. Another acquisition took place in 2008: ETEC Gesellschaft für Technische Keramik mbH was also incorporated as a subsidiary and renamed CeramTec-ETEC GmbH .

In 2013, Rockwood Holdings Inc. parted ways with several of its companies and the CeramTec group of companies was sold to the British private equity company Cinven .

In 2017 Cinven sold the company to the private equity investor BC Partners for 2.6 billion euros.
