The weightlifting of men in the class up to 85 kg (light heavyweight) at the 2012 Olympic Games in London was held on August 3, 2012 in the Exhibition Center London . 23 athletes from 20 countries competed.
The competition consisted of two parts: tearing (Snatch) and pushing (Clean and Jerk) . The participants started in two groups in the snatch, in which they had three attempts. Whoever remained without a valid attempt was eliminated. Each starter again had three attempts in pushing. The athlete with the highest aggregate weight won. In the event of a tie, lower body weight was decisive.

- On October 18, 2016, the IOC disqualified the originally second-placed Russian Apti Auchadow for doping with dehydrochloromethyltestosterone and drostanolone . On November 21, 2016, the originally ninth-placed Georgian Rauli Tsirekidze , who had doped himself with dehydrochloromethyl testosterone and stanozolol, was disqualified .
- The Iranian Sohrab Moradi did not make a valid attempt in the break and was eliminated.
- Defending champion Lu Yong from China, in a leading position after the snatch, could not complete a valid attempt in the jerk and was therefore out of the ranking.
