Matthias Karmasin

Matthias Karmasin (* 1964 in Vienna ) is an Austrian media and communication scientist . He researches and teaches as a professor for these two subject areas at the University of Klagenfurt and he is director at the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Research (CMC) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . His publications identify him as a transdisciplinary scientist who integrates economics , cultural studies and communication studies .

Life

Matthias Karmasin studied journalism and communication science , political science , philosophy and business administration and qualified as a professor for communication science at the University of Vienna .

From 1990 to 1999 he worked as a university assistant at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and from 1997–1998 as a management consultant at Nausner & Nausner as a “scientist for business”.

As a member of the International Business Institute University of Vermont (UVM Burlington), 1993–1996, and as a faculty member IMBA WU-Vienna / USC ( University of South Carolina ), 1996–2002, he prepared his position as a substitute professor of the professorship “Media Management” ( C4) at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at the Technical University of Ilmenau (D) before (SS 1999 - WS2000 / 2001).

In 2000 he was offered a position at the University of Klagenfurt and a position at the Technical University of Ilmenau (C4); between 2000 and 2003 and between 2004 and 2007 he was head of the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at the University of Klagenfurt. In addition, he taught at the Vienna University of Economics , the Universities of Vienna, the FHWien , the University of Graz , the University of Krems , the University of Vermont (UVM Burlington), the University of Tampa (Florida), the TU Ilmenau , the University Karlsruhe TH, the University of Bremen and the PH Ludwigsburg .

Matthias Karmasin is married, has one child and lives with his family in Vienna. From 2003 to 2004 he was on parental leave. He is the son of the Austrian market and motivational research legends Fritz Karmasin and Helene Karmasin and the grandson of Franz Karmasin . His sister is the former Austrian Family Minister Sophie Karmasin .

Functions

Matthias Karmasin has been a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2011 and a member of the Academia Europaea since 2018. He is the first Austrian communication scientist to receive these awards.
