The ore freighter Peene Ore of the F. Laeisz shipping company is the largest merchant ship flying the German flag.

history

The ship was built in 1997 under the number 1116 at the Daewoo shipyard in Korea. The keel was laid on March 3rd, the launch on June 7th, 1997. The completion of the ship followed on September 10th of that year. The ship is classified as a Very Large Ore Carrier . The ship is of F. Laeisz bereedert .

Since 2003 the Peene Ore has been sailing under the name Paradise N for the Hamburg company Neu Seeschifffahrt in a ten-year charter contract . In March 2005, the ship, which previously sailed under the Liberian flag, was entered in the German shipping register. Since then it has been sailing under the flag of Germany, home port is Rostock , which the ship cannot call due to its size.

Collision on the Elbe in 2002

On June 3, 2002, on the Lower Elbe, near Teufelsbrück, there was a collision with the Dutch coaster Sea Charente . The coaster sailing under the Dutch flag had tried to overtake the ore freighter. It was drawn into the suction of the Peene Ore and hit its hull with its bow.

Divers found several cracks in the outer skin the following day, so that repair was necessary. The Peene Ore was docked with the help of six tugs in Dock 17 and, at 58 meters, was the widest ship that had been dried up in the 59 meter wide dock until then . Hundreds of onlookers had gathered on the Hamburg jetties to watch the maneuver. After the dock was emptied, the entire damage became apparent: in the collision, the hull of the Peene Ore was torn open over a length of more than 90 meters. The repairs took about a month.

Technical specifications

The Peene Ore is powered by a seven - cylinder two - stroke diesel engine from MAN (type: 7S80 MC), which was built under license by Hanjung Changwon. The engine with an output of 25,480  kW acts on a fixed propeller . The ship thus reaches a maximum speed of 14.5  kn .

The ship has seven holds with a total capacity of almost 179,140 m³. The holds are closed with hatch covers that are moved to the side to open.
