Teufelsbrück is the name given to the area where the Flottbek stream flows into the Elbe . Teufelsbrück (Low German: Düvels- or Dübelsbrück ) is located in the historic district of Klein-Flottbek on the southern edge of the Jenischpark in Hamburg and referred to a bridge on the Elbchaussee . The name has now also been transferred to the Elbe ferries jetty and the small marina. Today the area belongs partly to the Othmarschen district and partly to Nienstedten . The entire area is in the floodplain of the Elbe during storm surge .

Legend

De Düvel thinks about his rabbit

The place owes its name to an old legend :

At the ford , where the Elbchaussee crosses the Flottbek today, carts repeatedly crashed through wheel breaks. It was assumed that “it was with the devil” there. Then a carpenter was hired to build a bridge over the stream. He enlisted the help of the devil for the construction of the bridge and promised him the soul of the first living being that would cross the bridge.
After the pastor from Nienstedten had blessed the bridge on the day of the inauguration and wanted to step on it, a rabbit was frightened by the crowd and was the first living being to cross the bridge.

So much for the legend that exists in a similar way for other bridges . The somewhat more sober version reads like this: “In Danish times there were two bridges here, one over the Flottbek and one further west. The 'dövelten', i.e. 'double' bridge became the Düvelsbrück. "

Even today, a small statue (see the photo on the right: "The devil ponders his rabbit") reminds of the devil who, with the rabbit (because it was hardly a rabbit) in hand, ponders how this could happen to him - he had looking forward to the priest's soul!

Earlier figures of the devil were carved from wood and had been stolen several times.

port

Around 1867 the Prussian state had the intention to sell the foreland to the Elbe for the industrial settlement. The country house owners protested, and after long negotiations it was achieved that the municipal port of the communities of Nienstedten and Klein Flottbek could be built here. The country house and villa owners made the financing possible. In 1889 the port was put into operation. In 1933 a permit for boat storage and rental was granted by the Altona harbor authority. This permit was limited to only half of the port area in Teufelsbrück, as at that time there was still a lot of loading and unloading operations on the quay wall to the north. In 1962 the quays were demolished due to undercutting.
