Cultural economics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cultural economy or also cultural economics deals with economic connections in the fields of art, culture, but also with the culture industry. The starting point was the considerations of Baumol and Bowen (1965), who showed that a string quartet cannot increase its productivity, while all other sectors, at that time especially industry, could very well. As a result, more and more economists have commented on cultural economics and on the one hand the Association for Cultural Economics International (ACEI) and in 1973 the 'Journal of Cultural Economics' (JCE) came into being. The main focus in cultural economics is on welfare economic considerations and questions as to whether, how and to what extent state interventions are necessary to avoid underproduction due to market failure.

In addition to William J. Baumol and Bowen, Alan Peacock , Mark Blaug , Ruth Towse , Victor Ginsburg , Gillian Doyle and Francoise Benhamou have also made a name for themselves in the cultural economy.

A related discipline is the economics of copyright. The focus is on the effects of copyright on economic relationships. The Society for Economic Research on Copyright Issues (SERCI) publishes the journal Review on Economic Research of Copyright Issues (RERCI).

With state subsidies and private sponsorship of cultural institutions such as museums , operas , theaters and orchestras , cultural management and principles of economic efficiency become binding for these institutions when using the scarce funds. As a result, cameralistic and business management principles find their way into a segment remote from the market economy. They are one pole of the scientific interest in cultural economics. The other pole is the meaning of culture and the values it has passed on, as the framework conditions and prerequisites not created by the economy itself for the economy embedded in culture and society (see economic sociology ).
