Lány Castle ( German  Lana Castle ) is the summer residence of the Presidents of the Czech Republic . The baroque castle is located in Lány about ten kilometers west of Kladno .

history

The first mention of the complex as a fortress comes from the year 1392. In 1589 Emperor Rudolf II got Lány and converted the aristocratic residence into a hunting lodge . In 1681, the Wallensteins received rule, followed by the Fürstenbergers in 1733 . During their reign, the castle was rebuilt by Amand Louis Bauqué and Albert Emilio Pio and received its current appearance. In 1921 the Czechoslovak state bought the castle and instead of the Hluboš castle it became the summer residence of the first president of the republic Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk , who is also buried here in the village cemetery, where other family members were later also buried. The 110 hectare park, which is also open to the public, dates from the 18th century. The Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik took part in its design in the years 1921–1930 . The castle is not open to the public and is secured by the castle guard .

Lana Castle went down in the history of relations between Czechoslovakia and Austria through the Treaty of Lana , which was concluded here on December 16, 1921. On April 11, 2016, Austria’s Federal President Heinz Fischer was received in the castle by Czech President Miloš Zeman ; it was the last state visit by Fischer in his twelve-year term. Zeman had Fischer brought to Lana from Prague's main train station in a historic wagon which, according to media reports, had been used by Archduke heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este in Bohemia until 1914 .

In September 2018, Miloš Zeman and Steve Bannon met at the castle .
