Laurenz Widholz (born May 2, 1861 in Frainspitz , Moravia , † November 19, 1926 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician ( SDAP ). Widholz was a member of the Reichsrat , Nationalrat and Landtag of Lower Austria . From 1919 to 1920 he also held the office of Deputy Governor in the Lower Austrian provincial government .

Live and act

After elementary school, Widholz attended an advanced training school and learned the trade of carpenter. He was subsequently assistant chairman of Vienna's carpenters for many years. In addition, Widholz was involved in social security and rose to become chairman of the regional health insurance fund for carpenter and the association of health insurance companies in Vienna and Lower Austria. Later he held the office of chairman of the Reich Commission of Austrian Health Insurance Funds.

In 1907, Widholz won the first direct mandate to the Imperial Council of Social Democrats in Simmering and was sworn in on June 17, 1907 as a member of the Club of German Social Democrats. He was a member of the Reichsrat until July 25, 1914 with brief interruptions. From May 30, 1917 to November 12, 1918 Widholz was again a member of the House of Representatives. Widholz was a member of the Provisional National Assembly from October 21, 1918 to February 16, 1919 and was a member of the Constituent National Assembly from March 4, 1919 to May 31, 1919. At the same time he was a member of the provisional state parliament of Lower Austria from November 5, 1918 to May 4, 1919 and was also a member of the state parliament from May 20, 1919 to May 11, 1921, also during the phase of separation of Vienna from Lower Austria. Widholz initially joined the Vienna Curia on November 10, 1920, and was a delegate from Vienna from December 30, 1920. In addition, Widholz held the office of Deputy Governor of Lower Austria between May 20, 1919 and November 10, 1920. On November 10, 1920 Widholz was sworn in as a member of the National Council, to which he belonged until his death.

From 1912 onwards, Widholz was involved in the construction of residential buildings for working-class families in Braunhubergasse by the local health insurance fund and campaigned for the standardization of social security. In addition, he was committed to the protection of apprentices and child welfare.

He is buried in the arcade courtyard of the Simmering fire hall in an honorary grave of the City of Vienna. After his death, a community building in Geiselbergstrasse in Widholzhof was named in his honor in Vienna's 11th district. In addition, Widholzgasse in Simmering has been named after him since 1971 .
