Life

Karl Rössel-Majdan, son of the singer and music teacher Karl Rössel-Majdan (1885–1948), studied at the University of Vienna from 1935 (Dr. jur. 1939, Dr. phil. 1949, Dr. rer. Pol. 1951).

After Austria was " annexed " to National Socialist Germany in 1938, from 1939 he built up an illegal student group. In autumn 1938 he founded the Greater Austria Freedom Movement , in 1939 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and, after being wounded, sent to a hospital. There he pursued his information activities for the resistance movement, which led to his arrest by the Gestapo on October 22, 1940. On June 29, 1944, he was sentenced to ten years in prison by the People's Court for “preparation for high treason”. In March 1945 he managed to escape from the Vienna- Lobau forced labor camp . Until the end of the war he was able to survive as a “submarine” with a friend and take part in the fighting in Vienna. He received food from his father, which came from his pupil Hilde Rössel-Majdan , who would later become his wife.

From 1946 Rössel-Majdan worked at ORF , initially as a scientific consultant and in the personnel department, later as head of the radio research department and head of the international shortwave service. From 1961 he was also active in adult education.
