Hans Sterneder (born February 7, 1889 in Eggendorf (Lower Austria) , † March 24, 1981 in Bregenz ) was an Austrian writer .

Life

Hans Sterneder was the illegitimate child of a landlord's son and a farmer's maid and initially lived in his grandmother's chaste . After the early death of his father, he was accepted into the estate of his wealthy grandfather, who enabled him to attend high school. After graduation , Sterneder went on a journey across Europe as a rolling brother from 1909 to 1911 . During this time he made the acquaintance of the philosopher Ernst Haeckel , the painter Hans Thoma and, on the recommendation of Peter Rosegger , the writer Richard Voss . From 1912 Sterneder completed the teachers' seminar in Vienna, financed by Richard Voss, and then taught as a teacher at a Styrian village school. His experiences as a teacher formed the basis of his debut novel The Peasant Student . While his early works are characterized by the author's strong closeness to nature and a cosmic-religious approach to life, from the novel The Miracle Apostle onwards, mystical and esoteric themes formed the focus in Sterneder's work. At the age of 35, Sterneder made the step from a writer to a visionary preacher.

Hans Sterneder lived as a freelance author in Gloggnitz in Lower Austria and later in Bregenz . After Austria was annexed to the German Reich in 1938, no more works by Sterneder appeared until the end of the Third Reich; In 1944 the author was temporarily in custody. After 1945 he could no longer build on his literary successes of the twenties and thirties , and although an association of the friends of the poet Hans Sterneder had existed since 1963 , Sterneder was largely forgotten. From 1988 his works were reprinted by a German esoteric publishing house.

Hans Sterneder was a member of the Austrian PEN Club . In 1976 he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art .
