Erroll Grandy

Erroll "Groundhog" Grandy (* 2. January 1921 in Norfolk (Virginia) ; † 12. June 1991 ) was an American jazz - organist and music teacher.

Erroll "Groundhog" Grandy is considered the "Godfather of Jazz" in Indianapolis . He was a sponsor of later famous jazz musicians such as Wes Montgomery , Freddie Hubbard , JJ Johnson and Slide Hampton . After moving to Indianapolis in 1936, Grandy graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1940 and then studied at the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music at Butler University , which he financed with his performances at Boulevard Kitchen (21st and Boulevard Place). In the early 1950s, he ran his own band, performing in Indiana Avenue clubs. He also played in Jimmy Coe's band and Count Fisher's trio in the 1950s . He also accompanied guest artists such as Dinah Washington , Billie Holiday and Lionel Hampton in the city . In the 1970s he was a member of the Three Way Street formation , which also included singer Jimmy Guilford. In 1984 the City of Indianapolis organized Grandy Day in his honor , which also included a benefit concert in his support.
