Friedrich Knauer (zoologist)

Friedrich Carl Knauer (born March 31, 1850 in Graz , † July 31, 1926 in Vienna ) was an Austrian zoologist .

Friedrich Knauer studied physics, chemistry and zoology at the University of Vienna from 1868 to 1872. In 1887 he became director of the vivarium in Vienna's Prater . He campaigned for the establishment of a zoo on the Schüttel and became its director in 1893.

Knauer wrote zoological textbooks for schools and lessons as well as popular scientific publications and published the journal Der Naturhistoriker . He became a member of the Keplerbund es, which aimed at a reconciliation of natural science and Christianity, as well as a member of the presidium of the Association of German Researchers and chairman of the Austrian Natural Science Society.

After his death Knauer was buried in the urn grove of the Simmering fire hall (wall niche no. 67). His grave is one of the honorary dedicated or honorary custody grave sites of the City of Vienna.

In 1930 Friedrich-Knauer-Gasse in Vienna- Favoriten was named after him.
