Georg Kövary

Georg Kövary (born February 21, 1922 in Budapest , † March 7, 2009 in Vienna ; actually György Ödön Miklós Kőváry ; pseudonym: Eric Corda ) was an Austrian writer .

Life

Georg Kövary attended elementary school in Berlin; his father Julius Kövary, a co-founder of the Hungarian cabaret, had moved to the film metropolis as a well-known actor in the 1920s. Kövary attended grammar school in Budapest and then worked as a journalist, translator into Hungarian of works by Ödön von Horváth , Franz Theodor Csokor and later by Georg Kreisler and others, cabaret artist and film dramaturge. From 1952 to 1956 he was head of the dubbing department of the Hungarian Film Works.

After the Hungarian uprising in 1956, he fled to Vienna, where he was also a recognized journalist and wrote film and theater reviews for newspapers such as the Kurier , the Wiener Journal and Die Presse . As part of the aid to Hungary, he got involved with his compatriots and organized a charity matinee with stars such as Peter Alexander , Karl Farkas , Hermann Leopoldi , Hans Moser and others at the Vienna Volkstheater . a. Later he also worked for the newspapers Die Bühne , Die Furche and Pester Lloyd and the satirical magazine Lúdas Matyi.

Kövary, an Austrian citizen since 1958, took over the management of the Wiener Theaterring at the daily newspaper Kurier for 16 years and headed the film club in Palais Pálffy. In addition to his book publications, he worked for radio ( Vienna 1 to 23 , Wiener Konzertcafé , thoughts of a humorist ) and television. He wrote and staged around 50 radio plays; his second wife, Brigitte Garzarolli-Thurnlackh, was the assistant director. He translated works by Tibor Váradi, Károly Szakonyi and Árpád Göncz from Hungarian .

His urn grave is in the cemetery of the Simmering fire hall (department E19, number 673).
