Paul Polansky (musician)

Paul Polansky (born Pavol Feldman ; born June 14, 1925 in Moravská Ostrava , Czechoslovakia ; † March 17, 2010 in Vienna ), was a Slovak - Austrian jazz musician and radio presenter .

Life

Polansky, who studied at the Bratislava Conservatory from 1945 to 1952 and graduated in trumpet, later became one of the most important drummers on the jazz scene in the ČSSR. He was one of the most important personalities in Slovak jazz and founded numerous bands, including the dance orchestra of the Bratislava students in 1947.

From 1950 Polansky was editor of the Czechoslovak Radio . From 1953 he worked as a composer and conductor with the radio string orchestra and then with various jazz bands, including 1963/64 as a guest in the SHQ Combo of Karel Velebný .

After regularly broadcasting jazz music on his radio program, Polansky became one of the most famous radio presenters on the Czechoslovak Radio in Bratislava before emigrating to Vienna in 1968 when the Prague Spring was crushed. At Austrian Broadcasting , he was, among other things , head of music for Ö3 , head and founder of the ORF jazz editorial team, and head of the entertainment music production department.

For 21 years Paul Polansky was the editor of the Ö3 music program Musik zum Träume, which was broadcast unmoderated every evening . After 1989 he hosted the program Pekná hudba on the Slovakian broadcaster Rádio Twist for several years . From 1991 he was also a member of the jury at the Slovak Jazz Festival in Žilina .

Polansky was buried in the cemetery of the Simmering fire hall in Vienna (group E8, number 146).
