Karel Velebný

Karel Velebný (born March 17, 1931 in Prague ; † March 7, 1989 ibid) was a Czech music teacher and jazz musician of " modern jazz " and "early creative" as well as a father figure of Czech jazz.

Life

Velebný was a trained drummer, but could also play the piano, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet and vibraphone. When the political situation in Czechoslovakia relaxed a little in 1956 , he was involved in all important initiatives of Czechoslovak jazz.

In 1956 he founded the "Karel Krautgartner Quintet" with Karel Krautgartner , which Karel Gott accompanied and played swing and Dixieland jazz . A number of excellent Czech jazz musicians were his students. He founded the jazz band Studio 5 in 1958 , followed three years later by the first Czechoslovak chamber ensemble, which was inspired by the Modern Jazz Quartet , and the SH Quartet ( SHQ ), which initially played the music for Spejbl and Hurvínek and later accompanied Eva Olmerová . Velebný was open to the influences of free jazz, or rather free expression, as well as folklore. This band played with strength and ingenuity. The piece Nude, for example, is strongly reminiscent of the Modern Jazz Quartet and American jazz of that time (1960s), the free expression of Andulko Safarova , however, has more of a European classical influence than free, Waldi On the Castle is a hard-boped piece with disciplined free jazz elements . A little later the SH quartet was expanded to a quintet. During the 25 years of its existence several generations of jazz musicians, for example Jiří Stivín and George Mraz , played along. Velebný as a permanent member played vibraphone, composed and arranged. In 1968 the Saba label released recordings of the SHQ expanded to a nonet .

Outside of this formation, Velebný played in the dance orchestra of the Czechoslovak Radio, performed as a studio guest with the Gustav Brom Orchestra and other ensembles. In the 1970s he was also involved in productions by Václav Zahradník .

Velebný formed the Veleband as a school band in 1983 . It has been a Czech all-star band since the 1990s with the most important musicians from various Czech jazz groups such as Hot Line , Naima , The Four and Stepan Markovics Jazz Face . The band made three recordings for Arta Records , with musicians Jan Hála, Rudy Linka , Karel Růžička , Emil Viklický and Zdeněk Zdeněk contributing compositions and arrangements for Hic Sunt Leones . Tribute was published posthumously on Karel Velebný's 60th birthday. The compositions for the third album were originally recorded by SHQ as Jazz Non-Fables in 1972 , a famous album by the band at the time that was a major influence on many of the musicians who were involved in the big band version many years later.

Velebný died in 1989 at the age of 58.
