Emil Viklický (born November 23, 1948 in Olomouc ) is a Czech composer and pianist of modern jazz .

Live and act

On the advice of his father, Viklický studied mathematics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Palacký University in Olomouc until 1971 ; for his diploma thesis on symmetric polynomials he should be awarded the doctoral degree, which was prevented by the faculty management for ideological reasons. After his military service, which he spent as a pianist in the army choir, he played in Karel Velebný's ensemble SHQ from 1974 to 1989 . From 1977 to 1978 he studied composition at Berklee College in Boston and then took private lessons from George Crumb and Václav Kučera . Back in his home country he wrote film music and worked with changing jazz groups. After Velebný's death he took over the management of the summer jazz courses in Frýdlant and was also active as a lecturer. He also founded the Ad Lib Moravia Ensemble , which released its album "Fast Falls the Rain" in 1994 and toured the United States and Mexico in 1996. Viklický appears together with František Uhlíř and Laco Tropp under the name Viklický Trio . He has also appeared with Lou Blackburn , Benny Bailey (on whose album While My Lady Sleeps he participated in 1990), Scott Robinson , Eva Olmerová , Harald Gundhus and the Finnczech Quartet and played at international festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival . In 1992 he recorded with Jiří Stivín's band at the Reduta Jazz Club in Prague . Since 2000 he has appeared in various constellations with George Mraz . His composition The Mystery of Man on texts by Václav Havel was written in 2004 for the concert big band of Wynton Marsalis .

From 1991 to 1995 he was President of the Czech Jazz Society . As a composer, in addition to jazz compositions and film music, he also wrote operas, symphonic works and electroacoustic music .

Honourings and prices

In 1974 he was awarded the first prize for the best pianist at the Czech amateur festival. In 1976 he won the Lyon Composition Competition and in the same year the Monaco Competition for the best jazz composition with “Green Satin” . With Paradise Park he received the special prize for electroacoustic music in Prague in 1996. His opera Faidra won first prize in the international competition Nová Opera pro Prahu 2000. In 2011, Viklický received the Medal of Merit from Czech President Václav Klaus .
