history

In 1976 residents from Zumalai , Lolotoe, Ermera and Ainaro fled to Zoilpo from the invading Indonesians . In Guda they founded a base de apoio , a resistance base.

In 1999 there was a wave of violence by pro-Indonesian militias ( Wanra ) and the Indonesian military who wanted to decide the upcoming independence referendum in favor of the occupiers. At the end of May, the then sub-district of Lolotoe was also affected. There have been arbitrary arrests, abuse, rape, torture and murder.

Indonesian soldiers and members of the Kaer Metin Merah Putih (KMP) militia rounded up members and alleged supporters of the CNRT , the umbrella organization of the East Timorese independence movement. Many were beaten and tortured, and women were raped.

On May 24, Mário Gonçalves , head of the CNRT in Guda, was herded into a field and beaten by 37 members of the KMP, two of whom struck with a machete. Then they cut off one ear and forced him to eat it. A total of six Sucos men were arrested and did not return home until two weeks later.

On August 30, 1999, the majority of the population voted for East Timor's independence. There was one last outbreak of violence, and the residents of Guda had to flee. An international emergency force finally ensured peace and order and after three years of UN administration , East Timor regained its independence.

At the beginning of 2002 two KMP commanders and the former village chief Gudas Sabino Gouveia Leite were brought to justice for crimes against humanity. Leite was sentenced to three years in prison on November 20, 2002 for deprivation of liberty and assault. Militia chief José Cardoso Ferreira was sentenced to 12 years for murder, torture and rape, militia commander João Franca da Silva was sentenced to five years for deprivation of liberty and torture.
