Zumalai is an East Timorese town in the Zumalai administrative office in the municipality of Cova Lima .

geography

Zumalai is located in the center of the administrative office, as the crow flies, about 70 km southwest of the state capital Dili , at an altitude of 199  m above sea level. The place consists of several districts that are spread over several sucos : Zobete , Lepokanua and Naguidal ( Nagidal ) belong to Raimea , Salasa belongs to Lour , the center of Zumalai, Zulokota , Dilukede and Maliseran belong to Zulo .

This is where three national roads meet. From the west from Suai (air line distance: 26 km), from the east from the town of Hato-Udo (16 km) with a junction to Ainaro (19 km) in the northeast and from the north a road that later leads to Bobonaro (19 km ) and after Atsabe (26 km) splits. Zumalai has a total of three primary schools, two preparatory schools for secondary school, a helipad and a community health center.

The parish of Zumalai is dedicated to Our Lady on Mount Carmel . There is also a Carmelite Mission here, which owns the youth center, elementary school and health center.

history

The pro-Indonesian militia Mahidi committed various acts of violence in the area of ​​Zumalai during the 1999 independence referendum . In mid-August 2006 fighting broke out in Zumalai between the groups Saka Izoladu and Colimau 2000 , in which one person died. The population fled the area.
