Peter Strasser (politician)
Peter Strasser (born July 3, 1917 in Jena , † June 6, 1962 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ).
Life
Before the First World War, Josef Strasser , Peter's father, was a leading functionary of the social democratic movement in Reichenberg , Bohemia , then part of Old Austria. His mother Isa Strasser was also convinced , although she came from the Prussian nobility. Peter's parents later came to Vienna and joined the Communist Party of Austria .
Peter Strasser became a member of the Socialist Workers' Youth at the age of twelve and from 1934, during the time of the dictatorial " corporate state ", took on important tasks in the then illegal "Revolutionary Socialist Youth". During this time he met Josef Hindels , who was involved in union youth work.
In 1938 Strasser fled with his wife Jenny from what was now National Socialist Austria to France, where he was detained by the police for ten months. After the Nazi occupation of France, he lived underground and also worked with the Resistance , but was arrested and extradited to the Gestapo . After a short stay in a concentration camp, the regime obliged Strasser to work as a welder in a German arms factory. Strasser escaped military service through a fake illness.
On April 27, 1945 Austrian politicians declared the resurrection of the republic . The next day, supporters of the SPÖ decided under Strasser's chairmanship in the Vienna City Hall to found a socialist youth organization; the communists' suggestion to do this together with them was not followed. The Socialist Youth of Austria was founded in 1946 and was chaired by Peter Strasser until 1954.
In 1948 he was elected chairman of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY). In 1949 he became the youngest member of the National Council . In 1960 he also took over the role of chairman of the SPÖ Alsergrund .
After Strasser died of cancer in 1962, a large cooperative building at the end of Landstraßer Hauptstrasse in Vienna's 3rd district was named Peter-Strasser-Hof. On July 3, 2012, a memorial plaque was unveiled on his former home at Meynertgasse 3 in Vienna- Alsergrund .
His urn grave is in the urn grove of the Simmering fire hall . It is one of the grave sites of the city of Vienna that are dedicated or taken into custody on account of honor.
